About Highlights

The right
blonde
for you.

Highlights are foils, placed in seamless sections from root to tip, which is what gives you that brighter, more even, more crafted blonde than balayage. How light you go and how much of it you have is up to you and your hair.

We do everything from a scattering of fine babylights that just lift your natural colour, to a full head of highlights that takes you to a high impact blonde. Every set is finished with a toner to get the shade exactly right, whether that's icy, beige, honey or something in between, and we'll tell you honestly what your hair can do in one appointment and what will take two. Highlights usually need doing every 3 to 4 months, with a toner in between to keep them fresh.

Blonde is what ELM in Wrexham is best known for. Jess is our blonde specialist, and Emma, who owns the salon, is a Wella Master Colour Expert, so going lighter is something we do every day rather than now and again. Every colour appointment starts with a free consultation, and if it's your first colour with us you'll need a quick skin test at least 48 hours before.

What to Expect

How It Works

01

Consultation and skin test

We look at your hair and any colour already on it, go through the photos you've saved and talk about how light you want to go and how often you want to be back. We agree the plan and the price before anything goes on. If it's your first colour with us, we do a quick skin test at least 48 hours before.

02

The appointment

Foils go in section by section, process, then we rinse and tone to get the exact shade, and finish with a blow dry so you can see it properly. Allow around four hours for a full head, less for a half head or a parting and hairline top-up.

03

Keeping it bright

You'll leave with an aftercare plan for your hair, not a generic one: how to keep it from going brassy at home, when to book a toner between appointments, and when your next full set of highlights is due, usually every 3 to 4 months.

So having to put trust in a hair dresser is very hard for me, ive been suffering for years with my scalp and finding a hairdresser that can tackle this aswell as give me confidence with my hair over the years has been a struggle. I came to Emma with a big job at hand and not only did she make me feel comfortable she tackled the unthinkable. My skin test on my first appointment she was honest with me and said right let's tackle the cut and get a plan in motion with the scalp, 2nd appointment in and my scalp was completely clear omg years of suffering with psoriasis and I one session I felt a million dollars! Aswell as this she tackled a bodged haircut which made me feel uncomfortable to even have my hair styled. 3rd appointment she corrected a years worth of failed bleach and uneven tones aswell as overlapping that I couldn't see underneath, not only did I walk out with an even colour, but I walked out with a smile, she's been very honest on where to go moving forward and im so excited for my hair journey! Highly recommend Emma and her team so welcoming made me feel comfortable 😊 Emma is amazing and I can't thank her enough for the confidence I now feel. Best hairdressers in wrexham by far!

Highlights FAQs

Good to Know

It depends on whether you have a full head, half head or just a few around your face, and on your hair length and how light you're going, so we don't put one price on it. Book a free consultation and we'll look at your hair and give you an exact price before anything is booked in. Jess is our blonde specialist, so ask for her if you'd like.

A full head is foils all over, underneath included, so you're blonde from every angle and it's the one for going noticeably lighter. A half head is foils through the top and sides only, where your hair parts and catches the light, so it's quicker, a bit less to maintain and a good way to keep highlights ticking over between full heads.

Usually every 3 to 4 months for a full set, with a toner or gloss in between to keep the shade fresh and stop it going brassy. If you'd rather be in less often, tell us at your consultation and we'll place the highlights and choose a toner so the regrowth is softer, or talk you through balayage instead.

Any lightening puts some stress on the hair, but done properly, with the right strength of lightener for your hair and enough time between appointments, it stays in good condition. We'll be honest at your consultation about how light your hair can safely go in one visit, and we'll usually add Wellaplex into your colour if you're going a lot lighter.

Sometimes, but often not, and we won't promise it until we've seen your hair. Previously coloured or very dark hair usually needs two or three visits to get to a clean blonde without wrecking it. We'll tell you straight at your consultation what's realistic in one go and plan the rest with you.

Yes, if you haven't had colour with us in the last six months. Highlights are finished with a toner, which is a colour, so the same rule applies: a tiny bit of colour on your skin at least 48 hours before your appointment. Pop in any time we're open or call us on 01978 263590 and we'll sort it.
